June 03, 2013 – The new Iconia W3 by Acer has squeezed the performance of a notebook into a mobile device no larger than Apple’s Mini iPad.
The new Acer tablet is promoted as being the only tablet that has the capability of placing an entire desk top in its user’s hand. The Iconia W3 is a sign of the future, as Microsoft will reveal its 8-inch Surface tablets at the company’s upcoming conference BUILD in late June. Other tablet and PC makers have also signaled plans with similar intentions.
The new Iconia W3 operates the full desktop Windows 8 version and has a pre-installed consumer version of Office. This highlights Acer’s thought that this device would suit students and families instead of businesses. However, it also comes with a Blue Tooth optional full-sized keyboard that can also be used as a stand for the device.
The new tablet is packed with the power of an Atom processor by Intel but with the tablet’s efficiency the user should get up to eight hours of battery life. A light amount of power consumption is helped by the fact the display is only 720 pixels rather than being a full HD, which often time puts much more strain on the device’s power and processor.
The tablet is not the world’s thinnest by any means at 12 mm, but the extra thickness allows Acer to incorporate micro HDMI and micro USB ports to connect to other devices like projectors and TVs.
The tablet will be available in 32GB and 64GB of storage internally and will support expansion of memory via its microSD card that can add up to another 32GB.
Starting on June 4, the tablet will be available through pre-ordering in the United States, prior to rolling out over the next weeks in other areas of the world. Its retail price is suggested to start at $379.
